Faculty sharing similar interdisciplinary research and teaching interests in the field of sustainable design at James Madison University (USA) and Malmö University (Sweden) have been collaborating online since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020. The collaboration, which is enabled using COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning), has gone from strength to strength, adapting the technique for practical based courses such as design and engineering.
”Biomimicry has worked really well as a theme, as it ties together both design and engineering thinking. Over the years, our graphic design students have come up with many wild ideas for design solutions that the engineering students at JMU have then had to take further and find technical solutions for.” commented Daniel Gaffner, director of the graphic design programme and former international coordinator.
