INU Nursing Collaborative

The INU Nursing Collaborative is a group of Faculty from 6 INU member universities who work together on collaborative projects in the field of nursing.

Background

The INU Nursing Collaborative was formed  in 2012 and began by hosting a Nursing workshop for students at Hiroshima University, Japan. The first workshop was delivered in August 2013 and was titled, “Peace and Disaster Nursing” with themes of: terrorism, pandemics, earthquakes. The Collaborative continued holding workshops in Hiroshima every year thereafter, up to 2017.  In 2017, the theme for this workshop was quality and safe care. The workshop was an intensive in-person 2-week immersion into the culture of Japan while participating in the workshop with multicultural undergraduate nursing students. Twenty-one students participated and ten faculty from nursing programs in the INU universities: Japan, Spain, Sweden, South Africa, United Kingdom, and USA.

Funding applications

The Nursing Collaborative continued to work together after the 2017 workshop. The group was committed to securing funding to support the initiatives surrounding quality care, patient safety, and cultural competency. The group applied for several ERASMUS + grants and an INU grant. After receiving funding from the INU’s Seed Money Fund, the group co-developed another workshop around the themes of leadership, cultural competency, and global citizenship. The on-line virtual workshop was delivered fall 2022 titled, “The Use of Virtual Learning Spaces to Cultivate Cultural Competency for Global Citizenship in Nursing”. Twenty-three graduate nursing students participated and six faculty from the same participating universities.

The group is gearing up to present in September 2023 at the Royal College of Nursing International Nursing Research Conference in Manchester, UK. The group is also preparing a manuscript on their research findings for submission to the International Journal of Nursing Sciences late summer/early fall. Below is a listing of the scholarly work.
