The INU Student Seminar on Global Citizenship:
Hiroshima, 4-11 August 2008
Program theme:
“Can Nuclear Weapons be declared illegal by International Law?”
The Student Seminar was held from the 4th to 11th August 2008. The program was scheduled to coincide with the 2008 Peace Memorial Ceremony in Hiroshima on August 6th and students were given the opportunity to attend this ceremony as part of an intensive cultural program.
Topics for this seminar included:
- Defining global citizenship
- Global governance - what is it and is it desirable?
- Security - how does the drive for security affect global citizenship? What do borders mean in the 21st century?
- What can the UN do on global issues such as nuclear disarmament? Is the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NNPT) still viable?
- Examples of active global citizenship.
The Role Play was held at the end of the Seminar. The topic for the Role Play was, "Can Nuclear Weapons be declared illegal by International Law?”
Once again, Hiroshima University has kindly offered to host the Student Seminar and funding from the Henry Fong donation has been made available to cover the cost of travel, accommodation and subsistence for one student from each full member University.

Organising Committee
The 2008 Organising Committee is derived from members across the network and is comprised of:
- Bob Goddard, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Development) at La Trobe University
- Professor Hajime Nishitani, Professor of Law at Hiroshima University
- Joanna Watts, INU Secretariat
- Dawn Koban, INU Project Manager
- Associate Professor Tom Weber and Mr Larry Marshall, academic staff members at La Trobe University
This year the Committee is supported by two additional academic coordinators: Dr Vandra Harris, who is Research Fellow in the Flinders Law School at Flinders University and Dr Devi Bhuyan who is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the International Beliefs and Values Institute at James Madison University.
