The INU Student Seminar on Global Citizenship:
Hiroshima, 4-10 August 2006

INU student seminar 2006 Alumni
The inaugural INU Student Seminar was held in Hiroshima from 4-9 August 2006.
About 55 students attended the seminar from over 12 countries around the world.
The Seminar involved lectures, group discussions and a role play activity. The lectures and group activities considered issues of security and sought to broaden consideration of this topic away from the narrowly defined military security to include all aspects of human security. The seminar also sought to provide participants with a basic understanding of the sources of conflict and some conflict resolution techniques. The role play activity focussed on the Japanese Peace Constitution and the Peace Clause, Article 9, which the Japanese Government is considering revising.
For the role play, the students involved were divided into 9 country groups (Japan, South Korea, North Korea, China, Indonesia, Australia, Russia, the EU and the USA ). Students were asked to act as delegates attending a special assembly of the UN to consider Article 9. The delegates were asked to consider the issues from their country's perspective but were also required to view the issues in the broader context of human security for the region.
Following a lively and inspiring dialogue and discussion, the delegates unanimously voted to support the continuance of the Peace Clause and indeed wanted to see other countries in the Region consider adopting a similar clause for themselves.
