Dawn Koban, INU Project Manager, conducted an e-Interview with Jaki to find out what his plans are now that he has won the Award.

Jaki, congratulations on winning the Henry Fong Student Award for Global Citizenship. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am 21 years old, I was born in Jakarta, but I have lived in Bogor for most of my life. Currently I'm living in Bandung for study. I'm in my last year in Parahyangan Catholic University. I'm interested in learning about security studies, globalization, and international development.

What was your reaction when you first heard that you had won the Award?

Actually it was late at night when I read the email, I had just got back from a Village in West java, near my home town. I have been driving for 5 straight hours, and at that time feeling very tired.  It took me a thousand times of reading the email thoroughly to finally realize that it is real. Such a lovely surprise for me!

What did your family and friends say when you told them you had won?

My parents were very happy, my girlfriend hugged me, my brothers and sisters also called me by the phone and congratulate me. My friends were all very surprised and happy for me. My friends from the INU seminar sent messages via the Facebook, they're all very nice. I'm a happy man indeed!

Now you have the INU Award for a semester of exchange, where do you want to go?

I haven’t made up my mind yet, but maybe Leicester University in the United Kingdom, La Trobe University, Flinders University in Australia, or Hiroshima University in Japan.

What made you want to attend the INU Seminar on Global Citizenship and Peace in Hiroshima this August?

Because for me, the seminar is a lifetime opportunity to contribute something for the world. I hope, with joining the programme i can meet other students from other countries, and share my cultural background, and my toughts about human kind. I bellieve that someday, there will be no separation between humans. People from all around the world would be in a global comunity, destined to help eachother and live in harmony. I bellieve that this seminar is the first step for us to accomplish this.

If you were able to give some advice to other students at your University who were thinking about attending the seminar what would you say?
Go for it! I can guarantee that It's a life changing experience that you wouldn't forget for the rest of your life, I know so because it had changed mine.

Do you think that you are looking at the world differently now after attending the seminar?
Yes, meeting different students from other countries, generous facilitators and phenomenal lecturers, sharing wonderfull stories and working together hand in hand have made me bellieve, that global unification is possible. It would take a very long process, but I believe that the seminar has shown me how global understanding between people is indeed possible, because we share  the same goals, same dreams, and the same need for world peace.

M. Jaki Nurhasya was singled out from a number of very good submissions from the students who participated in the 2008 Student seminar on Global Citizenship in Hiroshima. We congratulate Jaki on being the third student awarded the Henry Fong Award for Global Citizenship. Read his winning contribution (pdf).
