Council Meeting - Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore
The tenth annual INU Council meeting was held 20-22 September at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, Italy. Members met for two days to discuss a wide variety of issues.
The Council meeting included a presentation on current national and local issues from each member university and reports on all the INU activities and events during the last 12 months. The Council also considered future projects for 2010. Main tasks for the INU are to invite more members to the network and to attempt to secure more external funding for research. Initiative to organize more joint research workshops was also called for and currently one workshop is planned for 2010. Another priority is to update and make INU’s website more user-friendly and interactive.
Reports from the fourth INU Students Seminar and the inaugural INU Master’s Summer School in Hiroshima were presented to the Council. Student Francesca Benigno gave a much appreciated presentation on her experiences from the Seminar. In connection with these reports, the winner of the Henry Fong Award 2009 was presented to the Council. The Council meeting was preceeded by an Executive Committee meeting on the afternoon of 20 September and concluded by a Research Steering Committee meeting on 22 September. In addition the International Officers’ Special interest group had a workshop on 22 September.
The Minutes from the meetings in Milan have been sent out to members.
A warm thank you to Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore for a well arranged meeting and great hospitality.
INU Academic Committee on Global Citizenship Update
The Structure of the Academic Committee
At present, the Academic Committee is chaired by Associate Professor Andrew O'Neil from Flinders University. The Research and Curriculum Sub-Group and the Administrative Sub-Group are chaired by Dr. Pauline Stoltz, Malmö University, and Mr. Tony Pearson, University of Leicester, respectively.
At the Executive Committee Meeting in Milan on 20 September, the Executive supported the proposed organisation of the Academic Committee i.e., the Committee consists of two sub-groups: The Administrative Sub-Group and the Research and Curriculum Sub-Group. A Steering Group consisting of the two sub-group chairs plus an overall chair and a representative from Hiroshima University will handle operations during the year.
It was decided at the Council meeting on 21 September that each university shall appoint a professor to the Research and Curriculum Sub-Group and an administrator to the Administrative Sub-Group, and report the names and contact information to the Secretariat. New chairs for the Academic Committee and its Sub-Groups will be elected among those representatives appointed by the universities.
The role of the Administrative Sub-Group shall e.g. be to support in questions regarding credit transfer, collect information on courses and disseminate information within the home university on the Master’s Summer School and the Student Seminar in Hiroshima and select student participants for the events.
Master's Summer School 2010
The INU Academic Committe has during the past year been working on developing the Master's Summer School as part of the INU joint master program on global citizenship and given the course a well balanced academic content. Judging from the Students' Evaluations, following the course, it was work very well done.
At the Council meeting in Milan on 21 September it was agreed that all member universities should send teachers to the Academic Committee meeting in February 2010 and particularly those who will teach at the Master’s Summer School and Student Seminar in Hiroshima in 2010. If possible, the teachers sent should teach subsequent years at Hiroshima in order to strengthen the continuity. Dr Pauline Stoltz pointed out at the meeting, that it would be beneficial for the organisation of the Master’s Summer School and the Student Seminar if the Academic Committee and the Secretariat are informed of the names and contact information of those selected to teach at Hiroshima already by the end of 2009. The Secretariat will contact all member universities in this matter.
Academic Committee Meeting im Malmö, March 2010
The INU Academic Committe will hold a meeting in Malmö in conjunction with an INU Workshop on Humanitarian Intervention on 4 March 2010.
Research Steering Committee update
The Research Steering Committee held its third meeting on 22 September in conjunction with the INU Council Meeting in Milan. At the meeting it was noted that the Master’s Summer School on Global Citizenship and Peace is a successful way of bringing researchers together.
The INU Research Plan was also discussed and it was concluded that the highest prioritized areas for INU supported Research Workshops shall be as decided at the meeting in Liverpool on 15 June 2008:
- Peace, Cultural Heritage and the Global Citizen
- Health Informatics
- Sustainable Environment
As some of the members of the Research Steering Committee are no longer active, all member universities will be contacted by the INU Secretariat, and if needed the universities have to appoint a new member to the Research Steering Committee.
At the meeting in Milan the Chair noted three target areas for the INU Research Steering Committee for 2009/2010, to be recommended to the INU Executive at its next meeting:
- Ideas for further INU workshops and Research Collaborations
- Exploration of the services PricewaterhouseCoopers might provide to the INU and an action plan in accordance with their suggestion.
- An active Research Managers Special Interest Group to support, and collaborate with, the Research Steering Committee.
Workshop - Humanitarian Intervention
A workshop on the theme Humanitarian Intervention is going to take place in Malmö on 4 March 2010. The workshop is open for researchers from all INU member universities, and researchers outside of the network will also be invited to submit papers. Documents will be ready in November and can be sent to those who are interested. For further infomation, please contact the INU Secretariat.
Student Seminar and Master's Summer School 2009
A very successful fourth INU Student Seminar on Global Citizenship and Peace was held in Hiroshima in August 2009. This year's theme was Migration, Refugees and Peace. At the same time, the first ever INU Master's Summer School on Global Citizenship and Peace, an intensive course for Master students, was also held in Hiroshima. The development of the INU Master's Summer School, which is a part of the INU Joint Master's Program on Global Citizenship) has been made possible by a kind donation by the Riady family.
Both events were generously hosted by Hiroshima University.
Participants of the INU Master's Summer School and INU Student Seminar 2009 respectively.
The two events had separate programs, but students from the two met up in Hiroshima on 5 August to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and listen to the personal acount of A-Bomb Survivor and INU President Awadee, Mr. Keijro Matsushima. On 6 August all students met up again to attend the Peace Memorial Ceremony in the Peace Memorial Park.

Students evaluations showed very high ratings for both events and students' comments were very appreciative. The following is a comment from a student participating in the Master's Summer School: “Amazing... from the seminars to the size of the class, as well as the accommodations and the built in events such as going into Hiroshima, this was a life changing course.”

The full report from the INU Student Seminar on Global Citizenship and Peace 2009 will be published on the website soon.
