Criteria and procedures for admission of new members
To ensure an effective and active network the INU Council has determined that total INU membership should not exceed 20 institutions.
INU New Membership Eligibility Criteria
The following criteria are to apply to any institutions seeking to join the INU.
The institution must:
- be recognized by the relevant national government as a university (public or private)
- have a strong research profile
- have a strong teaching and learning profile
- have a strong commitment to internationalization, as articulated in its strategic plan
- offer an appropriate range of undergraduate courses in the English language
- with its inclusion, contribute to the global geographic balance of the INU
To facilitate an appropriate global spread, normally no more than two universities from any one country should be members of INU. The INU should also seek a balance in its membership between the regions of the world.
Admission Process
An institution seeking to join the INU must be nominated by an existing member and provide:
- an outline of its teaching and research profile and its strategic plan using the pro forma at Attachment A
- advice regarding other consortia of which they have membership
- evidence of institutional authority for submitting the application (normally at the level of President or Rector)
The nominating institution must:
- Outline reasons for sponsoring a nomination and provide these in writing to the INU Secretariat.
The INU Secretariat will then submit the nomination to members of the INU Executive who must:
- Assess any nomination against the eligibility criteria and the nominating institution’s case for nomination.
- Recommend acceptance or rejection to the INU Secretariat within 30 working days of the nomination being lodged, with reasons for rejection (if appropriate) articulated. Admission can only proceed by a unanimous affirmative response from full members.
