About the University

The University of Leicester is a Government-financed university with a leading reputation for teaching and research. It was founded in 1921 and is the youngest of the UK's “old” universities. It has almost 20,000 students, over half of whom are graduates, and is one of the UK’s largest providers of distance education with educational links in every part of the world. It has been consistently ranked in the top twenty of UK universities with a highest ranking of 12th achieved in 2008 when it was also named “Times Higher University of the Year”.
The University’s new academic structure comprises four Colleges: Arts, Humanities and Law; Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology; Science and Engineering; Social Science. Within the four Colleges are schools and departments providing a huge range of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses and high-level research opportunities.

Location

Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands of England, 160 kms north of London and half way between London and Manchester. There is an excellent train service to London that takes just 70 minutes and the city is close to the motorway network.
The main campus overlooks Leicester city centre, just 2 kms away, and a number of university buildings offer panoramic views of the city and surrounding area. One of the city’s many parks is alongside the campus and the University’s Conference Centre is a short distance away on an attractive site close to the University’s Botanic Garden

Research Strengths

There is world-class research in all four of the University’s colleges and Leicester is a member of the 1994 Group of internationally renowned universities engaged in leading-edge research and high quality teaching. Its most famous achievements include the discovery of DNA genetic fingerprinting and pioneering space exploration. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise Leicester is ranked 26th in the UK for the power of its research.
