About the University

Hiroshima University, established in 1949, is a leading international center of excellence and one of the largest and most successful research universities in Japan. Researchers at Hiroshima University continue to carry out cutting-edge research across a broad range of disciplines, and are at the forefront of current advances in science and technology. It is a national university and has approximately 16,000 students and about 2,300 faculty and staff.
The University offers the opportunity for study over an exceptionally wide range of subjects in 11 faculties and 12 graduate schools, at all levels from undergraduate to postgraduate, continuing education and higher professional qualifications. In addition, the university is home to 2 research institutes, a university hospital, and 11 affiliated schools.
Hiroshima University's mission of ongoing growth, as based on the five principles, is to create new forms of knowledge, nurture well-rounded human beings, continue self-development, pursue international peace, and collaborate with the local, regional, and international community.

Location

The main campus, covering 252 hectares, is situated in Higashi-Hiroshima (Saijo), a verdant area which is located approximately in the center of Hiroshima Prefecture and famous for sake brewing. Higashi-Senda and Kasumi campuses are located in Hiroshima City, known as the International City of Peace and Culture. Visitors will not only experience the wealth of academy but also rich nature, history, culture, and international community.

Research Strengths

Hiroshima University is recognized as one of the key universities in Japan. In addition to the development of excellent human resources, the university conducts research from the basic sciences to the distinctive and advanced in a wide variety of fields as a world-class educational and research center. Among its unique research institutes are the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine, the Hiroshima Synchrotron Radiation Center, the Research Institute for Higher Education, the Research Center for Nanodevices and Bio Systems, the Center for the Study of International Cooperation in Education, and the Institute for Amphibian Biology. The university is also moving forward with the realization of one of its five principles, “the pursuit of peace”.
