About the University
Founded in 1782 as the ‘Institutum Geometrico-Hydrotechnicum’, then renamed in 2000 the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), this institute was the first in Europe to train engineers at a university level. It now continues to lead in engineering and other fields in Hungary, ranking first among higher education institutions by the Hungarian Ministry of Education for a number of consecutive years. In addition, BME is one of sixty elite institutions across Europe to participate in CESAEER (Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research).
Engineering education in general
BME now supports 24,000 students across 8 faculties and hosts 21 masters and 15 doctorate schools, as well as 7 centres of research. From 2005/06 two-cycle linear higher education system (Bologna process) has been adapted in Hungary: 7 semester BSc programs (210 credits), 4 semester MSc programs (120 credits), DLA/ PhD Programs (3 years). With an international outlook, BME offers BSc, MSc and PhD curricula in English, partly in German, French and Russian. Publishes seven separate international scientific journals through Periodica Polytechnica issued by the BME- National Technical Information Centre and Library (www.omikk.bme.hu).
In recognition of its achievements, the Hungarian Accreditation Committee has named several of BME’s programs ‘excellent’.

Location
Located on the beautiful Danube River in Budapest, Hungary, the majority of BME’s buildings were listed as World Heritage in 1987. The university boasts views across the Hill Gellért as well as over two historic bridges. Budapest is a city with over a thousand years history, and attracts a large number of foreigners to its architecture and churches, its cuisine, art, landscape and warm culture.
