By authority of the INU Executive the first INU President’s Award was given in 2009 to Mr Keijiro Matsushima, a survivor of the Atomic Bomb that was dropped on the city of Hiroshima in the morning of 6 August 1945. Every year Mr Matsushima tells his story to participants of the INU Student Seminar and the INU Master’s Summer School. His acount is one of the most appreciated parts of the courses and it provides the students with a rare and very emotional personal reflection of the horrors that the use of nuclear weapons bring about.
The Award to Mr Matsushima was given with the following citation:
In recognition of your contribution to the theory and practice of Global citizenship and peace and your commitment as an educator to giving students the tools to play an active role in creating and maintaining a more humane and sustainable world.
In 2010 each student received a copy of Mr Matsushima’s story: “The A-Bomb that I experienced”. Students got a very appreciated opportunity to talk to Mr Matsushima and get their copy of the story signed.
